In Memory of Mike Royko (1932 -1997)
For the past year, METRO, and those who worship at
the alter of "Light Rail," led the public to believe that
"Light Rail" was merely intended as a "transit
option."
Now, after the "Solutions" referendum where voters
were tricked, METRO will be able to spend billions and billions
of taxpayer-dependent bond money on more wasteful rail. It is
now too late for the citizens to learn the disgusting
truth about METRORail.
By forcing thousands upon thousands of poor and minority, bus
transit dependent riders to transfer miles out of their way just
to be forced onto the Main Street tram each day merely to
create the illusion of citizen "acceptance," is an
unconscionable waste of their time which is unwillingly spent
waiting to use a heavily subsidized, bureaucratic,
and poorly devised "backbone" transit system which
has already had 32 incidents in the first few months of operation.
The downtown office vacancy rate has now climbed to 18%,
and I wish to suggest that the METRO tram project, along with
the over-aggressive behavior of some METRO police officers, have
chased a significant number of cars, people, and businesses out
of the Main Street corridor as an unexpected consequence.
METRORail clearly is not an option, and is it the first
step to something more sinister?
Where else in history were citizens "unpopular"
with the leadership forced onto trains by the power of the
state?
