METRORAIL Nominated for the Rube Goldberg Award for a 1/2-Billion
Dollar "Transit Backbone" System's Unique Way to take
Cars OFF THE Road, the Hard Way, with a Record Number of WAM-BAM-TRAM-RAM
Collisions

I am truly
impressed at how effective METRORail has been at taking cars
off the road, the HARD WAY, one at a time.
Therefore,
I am compelled to nominate Houston's METRORail for
the Rube Goldberg Award for a 1/2-Billion Dollar "Transit
Backbone" System's unique way to take cars off the roads,
the Hard Way, with a Record Number of WHAM-BAM-TRAM-RAM Collisions.
Rube Goldberg's
designs were symbols of man's capacity for exerting maximum effort
to accomplish minimal results. METRORail would have made him
smile.
Rube believed
that there were two ways to do things: the simple way and the
hard way, and that a surprisingly number of people preferred
doing things the hard way. In a word "METRORail."
Never before
in Houston has so much been spent to move so few, ever so
slowly, unreliably, and over such a short distance, while at
the same time removing so many cars (55+ collisions in less
than 8 months of operation), one at a time, from the road. Sure
to be a runaway winner.
