Subsidized housing numbers are so skewed
one must ask, who's watching out for whom?

It is no secret that there is a huge disparity in the number of vouchers issued to one racial group. Many who receive vouchers desperately need them, some may not. Few are convinced it is fair.

The system was broken long ago, and we as a community failed to fix it. None of the bureaucrats seem to recognize that the system is broken. Therefore, the unfortunate will likely remain that way. I often ask "who's watching out for whom?"

The same relative disparity exists in the racial makeup of City of Houston employees and that of METRO. This is not any specific criticism of any individual employee, as I know many employees who are pulling their share of the overloaded wagon.

In my mind, it seems merely a function of mindless bureaucrats placating special interests. The Latinos have few if any feathered nests in the local bureaucracies, and can generate little influence to correct the disparities.

There is an entitlement mentality among many in our society today, and that our leaders long ago succumbed to militant pressure groups. This acquiescence likely has fueled the push for reparations. Possibly, some of these same folks know that they will eventually be able to fill their pockets from the public treasury.

Success in a taxpayer-funded program should not be claimed by how many more families we subsidize for life, it should be measured in the number of families we help wean from public assistance.

The St. Vincent dePaul Society, whose mission for over 15 decades has been to feed and clothe, as well as help house the needy regardless of race, color or creed. Faith based groups do a much better job with a lot less waste, fraud and abuse of the taxpayer resources.
