More taking rides on Metro light rail

MetroRail ridership rose by nearly 11 percent in July, the Metropolitan Transit Authority reported Friday. Passenger counters logged an average of 29,570 daily boardings last month. July's count brings the average number of weekday train riders to 2 1/2 times more than when the Main Street light rail line debuted in January. Metro has set a goal of 35,000 daily riders by year's end.

METRO FARE BOX REVENUE CONTINUES TO PLUMMET. E-mail from Tom Bazan, plus link to Proof of Purchase for METRORail)

It appears that METRO is trying to out do Boston and their $14.6 billion+ "Big Dig" transit project. The question is will Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, with her unquestioning support for any rail project, be an enabler for a Transit Authority that should be on a Twelve-Step Program? METRO seems addicted to the euphoria of costly rail projects. One might ask "Just how many of our tax dollars will METRO be allowed to squander feeding this addiction?

METRO Awarded Grant Of $16.7 Million

Comments by Tom Bazan:
I do not remember reading this press release in the Houston Chronicle, do you? What does it take to get the Houston Chronicle to report where METRO thanks the U.S. House Majority Leader? Had Mr. DeLay opposed $16/7 million in more pork for boondoggle rail, there would likely be a blood-curdling howl from the bowls of 801 Texas.

The Houston Chronicle seems to have missed this story.

The METRORail has only been running without the massive police escort for only SIX months yet, after all that has been spent, said and done to chase cars out of the Main Street corridor, which appears to have been seized by METRO, collisions continue to occur at a sustained rate. The average is about one REPORTED incident every four days over the past 26 weeks!

When will the responsible elected officials realize that METRO created this demented "Demolition Derby."

KSEV has a METRORail parody song which is entertaining, and I would hope that someday it can be accessed from their website.

Rail expansion proponents fear stall

MIAMI -- Expansion of Houston's light rail line, along with other systems nationwide, could be delayed if Congress fails to complete action this year on a politically charged transportation funding bill, rail system operators warned Monday. . . . . read the rest of the story online.

The unelected and unaccountable METRO Bureaucrats are afraid that the flood of federal pork funds might not arrive, oh my!

Transit agencies might be forced to raise fares!

Since METRO's fare box recovery dropped every year under the "Transit Queen" DeLibero's watch, totaling over -15%, I thought METRO's ultimate goal was to just make the Tram a "Free Fare" novelty ride.

I did notice the postage stamp-sized blurb mentioning rail accident #43 (see link below).

COMMUTER RAIL
Just a flash in pan for Harris County commissioners?

Copyright 2004 Houston Chronicle

Prior to last November's vote on the Metropolitan Transit Authority's long-range mobility plan, Metro Solutions, members of Harris County Commissioners Court touted commuter rail as a better option than light rail. The county paid for a feasibility study. After a majority of voters said they indeed want more light rail, court members said commuter rail still could serve as a valuable component of a regional mobility system. . . . read the rest of the story online.

WHY NO MONORAIL For city's transit riders, two rails better than none
Copyright 2004 Houston Chronicle

The alarming number of train-car collisions threw doubt on the wisdom of light rail in Houston, but the data suggest that bad driving citywide is to blame, not a fundamental flaw in the light rail system's design. With federal funds, Metro could have built a grade-separated line, but that was not an option. . . . read

[Comments by Tom Bazan Sat, 17 Apr 2004 11:16:49 -0500: This may not be an accident, but nevertheless, it stopped our 1/2-billion dollar "Transit Backbone" system, at least 4 pairs of tram cars ($24 million in rolling stock), for over twenty minutes.

Thank goodness there were very few cash paying riders to be inconvenienced.

The driver certainly should be in all our thoughts and prayers.

I did not read the typical announcement by METRO that the driver had been gruffly ticketed by METRO police for illegally having a heart attack on the tram tracks.

I suspect the incident could very well have been initiated either as a result of being verbally assaulted by a METRO cop for having the unmitigated gall to drive a car into the Main Street corridor, or the driver experienced the wrath of a METRORail tram operator via several unsettling horn blasts for merely being stopped at a red light on the tracks. We may not find out the cause.

Is the rumor true that the new Houston Mayor will sponsor another ordinance which will
require a permit for anyone who wants to drive or park a car in downtown or midtown Houston?

The limousine liberal plutocracy will be exempt, of course.]
