Why Tom Bazan is Running for Congress.

I am not a politician, or a lawyer. I am a concerned citizen compelled to act on behalf of my family, grandchildren, friends, neighbors, and adversaries, to try and reduce the level of government waste, fraud and abuse of taxpayer funds as well as to change the direction of misguided policies that will cause tremendous hardship to future Houstonians.

I am outspoken and persistent in my attempt to cajole the City and HUD into enforcing the Lead-based Paint Laws, the cornerstone in our national Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention strategies. The incumbent has failed to respond, since 1999, to my calls and faxes. A single Lead-poisoned innocent child is one too many, especially when exposures could be easily avoided.

I have vociferously advocated that METRO improve bus service to the poor and minority, transit dependent rather than to divert precious transit funds for the wasteful spending required for expensive light rail. In 2001, when the voters demanded a vote, the incumbent sided with METRO's attorney, John O'Quinn, as they used our tax money against us to fight all the way to the Texas Supreme Court so as to disenfranchise Houstonians.

The massive bureaucratic spending for these ill-devised systems, largely financed by 30-50 year bonds, will indenture future generations.

One has to ask the question "after ten years, what has the incumbent accomplished that has actually improved our lives or our community?"

What can the incumbent bring to the district this next term to improve our quality of life?

Since the incumbent has been so confrontational, I do not believe the incumbent can effectively work with the Republican controlled Congress or White House.

Last year the incumbent wanted more hurricanes labeled with African names. The incumbent has been reduced to garner publicity by sponsoring a resolution to force the House cafeteria to rename "Freedom" fries and toast back to honor the French.

The incumbent has opposed the appointment of qualified women and minorities to our federal courts.

Is this leadership? Who's watching out for us?

For those who have long supported the incumbent, I can promise you that I will do better.

For the skeptics who think that this challenge is futile, I point to House Speaker Foley who lost his seat in 1994. Some might concede he was far more powerful and skilled than the incumbent.

In chess, even a pawn can capture the Queen.

I believe that I can work with the House leadership to find effective solutions to our needs.
